Hyrule. Thurdsay, [05/03 FT].

After it was generally ~~and mostly handwavily~~ decided that the group would use their extra day in Hyrule to visit the far reaches of the land in the Gerudo Desert, Sidon wished them well with his regrets that he would not be able to join them. Sure, winter on Fandom Island had definitely tested his ability to withstand different weather, but he knew the heat of the desert would still be far too much for him. Besides, he would never be able to pass as a vai in order to enter the city, so he would just wait for them back at Zora's Domain.

"I would say to call if anything goes amiss," he said before they left, "but after yesterday, I am not too sure that would be a possible solution."

But Ramella, the Gerudo guide, assured the prince that she would keep them from harm, and they gathered their horses, and set off to the southwest for the next and final leg of their adventure.

Norman was still over here, blinking.

"We do?"

This was news to him!

"We can't just leave you here," Breq pointed out. "And the styles preferred by females here is different enough than those of males, so I'm sure you'll do fine. We just need to get you some clothes and makeup."

"I mean... I guess so?" Norman sounded a faint bit dazed, now. Sneaking into a city populated by warrior women seemed... dumb? Suicidal? Both? "I don't know how to do makeup at all, though."

Norman, you were surrounded by girls. That would probably not be a problem.

"I've helped people do that for a very long time," Breq informed him. "That won't be a problem. We should go looking for a shop that sells clothes though."

Did Norman look a little nervous? "Don't worry, we'll all protect you if necessary."

Norman nodded a little.

"Uh, thanks? But I'll be the one breaking the rules," which didn't change the fact that he'd need protecting, granted. "What kind of clothes do I need?"

And what were they going to do about his hair?

Breq looked around them. "The more extravagant clothes seem to be a better choice. It's unlikely that anyone will mistake them from being men's clothes. And then some jewellery, perhaps."

There were plenty of things to do with his hair.

"O-okay," Norman replied, wide-eyed. "I'll let you pick what you think works best, then, since you've done this before?"

And because he was an utterly hopeless sneakers-and-hoodies boy.

"Good. Come on, then."

Breq turned and headed towards the bazaar.

And Norman followed along behind, in something of a daze.

He really would've just been happy waiting around with a hydromelon!

... Overnight. Alone. In the desert.

He shouldn't have to stay there all alone!

Breq soon found a shop that displayed clothes racks filled with colourful dresses outside, and more could be seen when looking through the entrance.

"Here," Breq said, turning to look at Norman. "Let's look inside."

Norman cast a sideways look at Breq, and then shrugged and stepped inside, peering around.

"This stuff is all pretty nice," he allowed after a moment.

Breq made sure to nod and smile at the shopkeeper.

"Yes," she said, looking at Norman to get an idea of what size would fit. "I'm sure we'll be able to find something for you."

Addressing the shopkeeper, she said: "We're looking for a dress for her. Pretty and fashionable. What would you suggest?"

Norman kind of shrank down a little under the shopkeeper's confused, somewhat speculative stare.

"I like red," he offered, pitching his voice up a little in a sort of soft falsetto.

There was no way this was going to work.

"Red suits you," Breq said to Norman, actually as serious as she looked.

"I think she needs a scarf around her hair too," she continued, now to the shopkeeper. And a necklace. I promised her a new necklace."

She didn't want them to cause too much suspicion, so Breq thought that a bit of acting probably would help.

"She promised she can make me the prettiest girl in Hyrule," Norman said, smiling brightly at the shopkeeper.

The shopkeeper was not buying this, but was stepping out to go looking for dresses in Norman's size anyway.

That was the most important thing, though.

The shopkeeper returned with three dresses in different shades of red.

"Which one would you like to try on first?" Breq asked Norman, and added, as he might find the choice difficult: "I think that one would suit you."

"Then I'll try that one," Norman replied, giving Breq a thankful look. "I trust your judgment."

So long as it wasn't too ridiculous and he could still move around in it, he'd go with pretty much anything.

Breq was practical, and she didn't want Norman to feel uncomfortable, at least not so badly that he wouldn't enjoy the visit. The dress was pretty, but it wouldn't make him look like a holiday decoration.

"Over there," the shopkeeper gestured as Breq looked around for somewhere to try clothes on.

Norman took the dress and made his way quickly over behind the curtain to try it on.

A few minutes later, looking a little bemused, he made his way back out into the room, arms held out to his sides, looking down at himself. He was showing skin in weird places; across his back, over his arms, and there were parts of the dress that hung on him a little strangely given his lack of breasts or curvy hips. But overall...

"I don't hate it?"

He didn't really love it, either, but he was going to feel that way about pretty much anything he put on in here.

Not every girl was curvy anyway, so Breq didn't think that would seem to odd. The shopkeeper tried not to let her surprise show at Norman's reaction though.

"Good," Breq said. "Do you want to try another one on or are you happy with that one?"

Norman looked down and tugged at it here and there, turning to look in the mirror and nudging things around until he felt a little bit less like he was a wannabe wearing a fitted bedsheet.

"You know, I think I'm happy with this," he settled on. "Now... what were you going to do about my hair?"

"Tie a scarf around it," Breq replied. "Perhaps one of those?"

She gestured towards a line of scarves hanging on the wall. "Pick a colour and I show you how to tie it."

It had been fashionable among the Radchaai at one point, and even though it wasn't permitted for officers in uniform to wear them, she had helped her officers on leave.

Norman considered the scarves on the wall, and, after a minute or two of consideration, he reached up and pulled down a gold-colored scarf with little red flowers on it. He wanted to avoid the black ones, mostly because they'd fry his brain out in the desert heat, and the red and the gold seemed to go together pretty well.

"How about this one?"

"It goes well with the dress."

Breq picked it up and reached up to expertly wrap it around Norman's head. He ended up with something turban-like, where the ends of the scarf fell loose over his right shoulder.

"What do you think? A necklace and then we're done."

Breq didn't think Norman would object.

Norman blinked and stared at himself in the mirror for a few moments.

"Huh," he settled on, reaching up and wondering if maybe he could just nudge a bit here and there so that it wasn't quite so turban like. He didn't have any business wearing a turban. A bit of hair peeked out around the back of his head, making him look a little bit like he had a crazy ponytail that refused to be tamed, and he immediately stopped poking, blinking and putting his hands resolutely down by his side.

"It's great, let's get a necklace."

Shouldn't have gone poking, Norman.
