Hyrule. Thurdsay, [05/03 FT].

After it was generally ~~and mostly handwavily~~ decided that the group would use their extra day in Hyrule to visit the far reaches of the land in the Gerudo Desert, Sidon wished them well with his regrets that he would not be able to join them. Sure, winter on Fandom Island had definitely tested his ability to withstand different weather, but he knew the heat of the desert would still be far too much for him. Besides, he would never be able to pass as a vai in order to enter the city, so he would just wait for them back at Zora's Domain.

"I would say to call if anything goes amiss," he said before they left, "but after yesterday, I am not too sure that would be a possible solution."

But Ramella, the Gerudo guide, assured the prince that she would keep them from harm, and they gathered their horses, and set off to the southwest for the next and final leg of their adventure.

Norman considered the scarves on the wall, and, after a minute or two of consideration, he reached up and pulled down a gold-colored scarf with little red flowers on it. He wanted to avoid the black ones, mostly because they'd fry his brain out in the desert heat, and the red and the gold seemed to go together pretty well.

"How about this one?"

"It goes well with the dress."

Breq picked it up and reached up to expertly wrap it around Norman's head. He ended up with something turban-like, where the ends of the scarf fell loose over his right shoulder.

"What do you think? A necklace and then we're done."

Breq didn't think Norman would object.

Norman blinked and stared at himself in the mirror for a few moments.

"Huh," he settled on, reaching up and wondering if maybe he could just nudge a bit here and there so that it wasn't quite so turban like. He didn't have any business wearing a turban. A bit of hair peeked out around the back of his head, making him look a little bit like he had a crazy ponytail that refused to be tamed, and he immediately stopped poking, blinking and putting his hands resolutely down by his side.

"It's great, let's get a necklace."

Shouldn't have gone poking, Norman.

"I can change it a bit if you like," Breq offered. "Or we can get a necklace."

"A necklace and makeup, right? We'll be here forever if we keep trying to get my hair to behave, trust me."

His hair basically had a mind of its own. There was no taming that mane.

"A necklace and makeup," Breq repeated, looking for the shopkeeper.

"That shouldn't take too long."

Unless Norman suddenly got very picky.

Norman was really not going to get terribly picky, no. He'd probably just grab the cheapest item available that would also get the point across that he was totally a girl, for real.

"It seems pretty straightforward."

Norman had never been makeup shopping before.

"It can be."

If you had a spaceship with a little fashion experience to help you.

"Red lips and black eyeshadow. I don't think you can go wrong with that. It would go well with the dress."

"O-okay," Norman said, looking at Breq and nodding a little. "Okay, if you say so. I'll just let you figure that out, I know I'll just mess it up."

"It takes some practice," Breq said, moving towards the shelf displaying small jars filled with bright colours. She examined the options. Had this been someone who actually cared about make-up, this would have taken longer, but she felt confident just to pick something that would work acceptably.

"Would you like to choose a necklace, or should I?"

"I think I can manage that," Norman replied, looking around the room. "While you pick that, I mean..."

He glanced at the shopkeeper, who gave him a bemused look before gesturing toward a small display of simple jewelry.

"It probably doesn't have to be anything too fancy, right?"

"Everyone is entitled to their own taste in jewellery," Breq said, trying to be encouraging rather than truthful.

"They are," Norman said, and then looked over the selection. "I... think I don't want something that'll draw much attention to my chest."

A pause.

"Because I'm self-conscious about that. Puberty hasn't done me any favors there yet."

...

God, this was awkward.

"Or you choose something big enough to cover that fact," Breq said. "You might be right though."

Breq wasn't particularly awkward. She had dealt with awkward teenagers before though, although not one to was trying to pass as the opposite gender. For obvious reasons.

"Anything big enough to cover that might just weigh her down," the shopkeeper was muttering, not trying terribly hard to keep from being overheard.

Norman blushed a whole lot harder.

"I'll just pick something," he settled on, and reached to pick up the first necklace he saw that was in his price range.

Breq gave the shopkeeper an expressionless look, then turned to Norman. "Let's pay for this when you've decided."

She did not appreciate someone who made rude comments about their customers, but going to another place would be too much hassle.

"This one is as good as any," Norman said, holding up the necklace he'd reached for. It was simple, with carved wooden beads. Nothing terribly expensive. Nothing terribly eye-catching. But definitely a necklase.

"I'll pay."

It seemed like a quicker way to get out of this place."

"We can settle it later if you like."

She turned to the shopkeeper, asking for the price and reaching into her pocket.

Norman nodded a little, fumbling with the necklace to get it on.

"Yeah," he replied, "I'll pay you back, thanks."

He really just wanted to get out of here.
