Hyrule. Thurdsay, [05/03 FT].

After it was generally ~~and mostly handwavily~~ decided that the group would use their extra day in Hyrule to visit the far reaches of the land in the Gerudo Desert, Sidon wished them well with his regrets that he would not be able to join them. Sure, winter on Fandom Island had definitely tested his ability to withstand different weather, but he knew the heat of the desert would still be far too much for him. Besides, he would never be able to pass as a vai in order to enter the city, so he would just wait for them back at Zora's Domain.

"I would say to call if anything goes amiss," he said before they left, "but after yesterday, I am not too sure that would be a possible solution."

But Ramella, the Gerudo guide, assured the prince that she would keep them from harm, and they gathered their horses, and set off to the southwest for the next and final leg of their adventure.

Peridot wasn't certain how she'd wound up in the class for impressing voe, no. She had little interest in dating, after all, though it did give her some insight as to how matriarchal societies worked when they were organic, rather than Gem.

Organic or not, this town was making her even more homesick. She spent a lot of time just kind of sighing as she took in a city that had been constructed with a certain feminine sensibility. Not that she was technically female, either. But with Gems, it was all really a matter of being close enough to count.

Naturally, the visitors had been the talk of the town, but this little Gerudo child didn't care for them too much. They all looked like boring adults, even if they looked like strange boring adults. This one, however, was clearly not boring....or an adult! She was even smaller that she was!

"Sav'aaq!" she bounced up and greeted the visitor brightly, eager for a new playmate. "Are you Goron?"

The stranger was certainly unlike any Goron she'd ever seen before, but, then again, she hadn't seen many Gorons.

Peridot blinked at the Gerudo child. And then looked back over her shoulder, blinking some more.

And then looked back at the child. And pointed to herself in question.

"Me?"

"No," the girl giggled, "the other green child in the plaza right now! Of course I mean you! My name's Isha, what's yours? We should be friends, I've never had a Goron friend before."

There were a lot of things going on in that statement that Peridot needed to protest. Child? Goron? What?

"Peridot," she settled on, because the child had asked her name. "I'm Peridot."

And it was possible that she as rolling with this at least in part because Isha reminded her a great deal of Steven.

"Peridot," Isha repeated to help her remember, giggling again. "So pretty! I thought Gorons had not-pretty names, like Grunk and Lunk, but Peridot is pretty! And I really like your hair! Did you just get here? What are you doing here? Have you been to Gerudo Town before?"

"My name is Peridot because that's what I am," she said, reaching a hand up to tap the gem on her forehead with one little green finger. "I'm a Peridot,, so I'm Peridot."

Gem naming conventions weren't exactly creative.

"I'm here with all the humans," she added. "We were visiting Prince Sidon, and he wanted to show us as much of Hyrule as he possibly could."

Which had been a fantastic learning experience! And also seemed to be making her progressively more homesick.

"I've never met a Peridot before!" Which was interesting, since apparently, a peridot was one of the few gems that couldn't be found on Hyrule. Isha squealed with delight, clapping her hands.

"I don't know Prince Sidon," she continued, "but prince means that he must be voe, and so he can't come here, ha! Only vai like you and me, new best friend Peridot the Peridot!"

And didn't she just sound so smug about that, too?

"Best friend?"

This was a concept that Peridot hadn't really spent much time exploring, and the quizzical look on her face probably said about as much, too.

"Uh-huh, uh-huh!" Isha's head bobbed up and down repeatedly. "I've got the prettiest best friend in the whole town!"

And, if Isha was even remotely introspective, she would look back at the moment twenty five years from now if this is where it all began, though it was very likely her best-friend-for-one-day Peridot would be...horrified at what she wound up doing to gems for a living.

But she wasn't. Not now as a child, and definitely not in the future as a blossoming and enterprising jeweler.

Now, she was just reaching for her new best friend's hand. "Let's go, let's go! Have you seen the sand seals? Maybe we can sneak into the palace and try to see the Chief! Or have you seen Vah Naboris? That's the big stompy thing outside the city, but we're not supposed to go near there, it's dangerous!"

Well... now Peridot was blushing, a blue tint moving over her cheeks. She looked at Isha's head holding hers, worked on wrapping her head around being called pretty, and then looked back up at the girl again.

"I haven't seen any of it," she admitted. "I think I would like to see it all."

She was here to learn, after all, and this Gerudo civilization intrigued her greatly.

And what better guide than a wee tiny child?

"Great!" Given an inch of permission, Isha was ready to take a mile...in running forward with Peridot in tow toward the sand seal stables. "We'll go see the sand seals first, they are so cute, and one day, when I'm big enough, I might even get to surf them like Tali does! She's gonna be the best sand surfer ever!"

Peridot was going to get dragged along, then! Possibly literally, face-first through the dirt, because she could hardly run on two feet at the best of times.

"What's that mean?"

What was a seal? What was a surf? She had no idea! This was going to be a journey of discovery, alright.

"Whoops." Isha stopped a little when she realized her New Best Friend Peridot wasn't keeping up very well. "Guess you don't walk too good yet, huh. I'm really good; I practice running all the time, int he sand, too, which is harder than anywhere else because you'll start to sink in!

"And those," she gestured toward the stable, "are sand seals! The best way to get around the desert if you're in a hurry, plus they're fun! If you have money, you can rent one, but if you don't, you have to try to catch one yourself, but that's not easy! They're really good at getting away and seeing you coming!"

... Walk too good yet? Peridot was pretty sure she was older than everybody on this trip combined! But before she could protest, there were seals, and Peridot was peering at them with an enthusiastic sort of curiosity.

"How do they work? Can I touch one? Can I have one?"

She had no idea if they'd get along with Pumpkin, but it seemed worth a shot.

"You can touch 'em, sure!" Isha said brightly. "They especially like to be scratched on their chin, underneath all those rolls, but I don't think you can have one, I mean, unless you're really rich or something because you'll have to buy one. Or you could catch one out in the wild, but that's real hard..."

And considering she couldn't even walk too good yet....it was probably going to be a while before Best Friend Peridot could catch wild sand seals.

Peridot wrinkled her nose a little at that.

"I'm not rich," she admitted. "But I could try to catch one. Maybe. I'm smarter than your average Peridot, you know."

Yeah, Isha wouldn't exactly have a basis for comparison there, 'Dot.

But of course she'd want to knooooow.

"How smart is the average Peridot?" Isha asked, giggling. "Smarter than a bokoblin?"

Most people were smarted than a bokoblin, so...

"Absolutely," Peridot replied immediately. Did she know what a bokoblin was? Nope. But her point still stood. "Very much smarter than a bokoblin."

"Smarter than a...." Isha thought for a second. "Than a molduga??"

They were a little bit smarter, she guessed, because they could sense where people were going even when underground!

Peridot squinted a little.

"Probably smarter than a molduga."

Yet another thing she had no idea about!

Isha squinted back.

"Probably?" she asked suspiciously.

Probably didn't sound very convincing, New Best Friend Peridot.

"What's a molduga?"

That part didn't help her position any, did it?

"Can't be that smart if you don't know what a molduga is," Isha insisted. "But a molduga is a big old monster that swims underneath the sand, and so you have to be real quiet and walk so, so soft," and she demonstrated for New Best Friend Peridot, crouching slightly and sneaking forward on her tippy-toes, "or else CHOMP!" She jumped forward and clapped her hands close to Peridot's face in an attempt to scare her. "You get eaten right up! Yum, yum, yum, you're a tasty molduga snack!"

Well done, Isha! Peridot was jumping backwards with a yelp at that clap in her face, falling on her butt and staring back with wide-eyes.

"Do they even eat Peridots?"

She wouldn't be terribly filling!
