Hyrule. Thurdsay, [05/03 FT].

After it was generally ~~and mostly handwavily~~ decided that the group would use their extra day in Hyrule to visit the far reaches of the land in the Gerudo Desert, Sidon wished them well with his regrets that he would not be able to join them. Sure, winter on Fandom Island had definitely tested his ability to withstand different weather, but he knew the heat of the desert would still be far too much for him. Besides, he would never be able to pass as a vai in order to enter the city, so he would just wait for them back at Zora's Domain.

"I would say to call if anything goes amiss," he said before they left, "but after yesterday, I am not too sure that would be a possible solution."

But Ramella, the Gerudo guide, assured the prince that she would keep them from harm, and they gathered their horses, and set off to the southwest for the next and final leg of their adventure.

Tip didn't think J.Lo would ever forgive her for passing up the opportunity to try seal surfing. Plus, he was going to be crazy jealous that she got to try it.

There were maybe half a dozen really awkward selfies sent off during the process, in which she very nearly lost her phone, but it was worth it.

And her efforts had been noticed by a teenaged ~~despite the icon shh~~ Gerudo vai who'd been out with a sand seal of her own.

"Not bad," Tali observed. "This your first time seal surfing?"

"First time doing any kind of surfing," Tip admitted. "I'm pretty lucky I didn't faceplant instantaneously."

She would have found a way to send a selfie of that to J.Lo too, let's be real.

"Must have gotten a good seal, and a good shield," the Gerudo mused. "That's just as much as talent as talent, really, so it's a good thing I've got a good one." She gave the seal a loving scratch under his chin before quirking a chin at the other vai. "Name's Tali. I'm going to be the best seal surfer in the whole desert one day."

"I'm Tip," Tip said. She was getting a lot of play with that alliteration on this trip. "Are there big competitions for it? That could be a lot of fun to watch. Especially if you all do tricks and stuff."

"See that hill over there?" Tali lifted her chin now toward a slightly raised plateau of sand not too far from where they were. "You can't see it from here, but there's an old platform there, and a big glowing ball. Every time there's a challenger, we throw up a coarse and race for the title of Sand Surfing Champ, and the Champ gets the ball and a belt. I don't think I'm good enough yet to defeat the current Champ, but once I am, watch out! I'm gonna be undefeated until the day I die."

How delightfully poorly organized! "I bet you will," Tip said, with absolutely no reason to have an opinion either way. "How long have you been practicing?"

"Since I first wrangled this guy here," another loving pet to the sand seal, who just seemed to pant contentedly and stare off into nothing dopily, "about...what was it, big guy? Five years ago? He put up a good struggle, too, took me months before I was sneaky enough to get him!"

"You caught him yourself?" Tip said, suitably impressed. "Wow! I've never done anything like that." Well. She had tamed a Boov, but those were sentient and could be reasoned with. Also, J.Lo would likely object strenuously to the comparison. "Does he have a name?"

Tali shrugged a little. It was basically a rite of passage for a Gerudo girl. First, you caught a sand seal. Then, you caught a voe.

She didn't have too much of an interest in that second one, to be honest.

"Milton."

"Nice to meet you, Milton," Tip said to the seal. "This place is really cool. I'm glad my friends and I got to come visit."

"You and your friends," Tali said, tilting his head. Milton, for the record, let out a little muffled sound that might have been a hello. "You're not from Hyrule, right? Word on the street's you come from somewhere else entirely."

It was a small town in the middle of no where. Word traveled pretty fast.

"That's right," Tip said. "We're from totally different worlds, actually. We're all friends with the prince of the Zora, from school."

Uma sidled up to Tip and held out a jar of sweet-smelling unguent. "For after you get out of the water," she said. "Between the salt and the heat, I can feel my skin drying out already."

And so...sharing. For reasons. Shut up.

"Gooooood plan." Tip accepted the jar gratefully. "I haven't been somewhere this dry in years."

"Me neither." Or ever, really. Uma had always lived on islands. "Having fun?"

"I really am," Tip said. She had the scrapes and bruises to prove it, even. "You? Want to give it a shot?"

"Riding a seal?" Uma said, looking intrigued. "I--yeah, actually. It seemed like fun, but I wanted to do some shopping for a bit first. What do I do?"

"Hang onto the rope and try not to fall over," Tip said. Her method was not super complicated, no. "What are you going to shop for?"

"Clothes," Uma said, a little wistful. "I've never had new clothes before and these ones are real pretty."

Tip was a little surprised by that, but knew better than to show it or comment on it. Instead she just nodded. "Plus, they don't look like anyone else's back in Fandom. You'll be the most fashionable person there."

Tip kind of thought Uma already was, actually.

Well, she'd had new-to-her clothes, and clothes that she'd pieced together from bits of other ones, but all the clothing on the Isle had come from Auradon first before being discarded. Uma was actually excited by the idea of wearing something that had never been worn before.

"I don't mind sometimes switching out 'pirate' for 'badass desert warrior,'" Uma replied, giving Tip a grin as she reached for some of the unguent herself. "Just to keep things interesting."

"The important thing is that it's still properly badass, right?"

Uma snapped her fingers and pointed at Tip. "See?" she said. "You get it."

"Hey, you've got a reputation to keep. Plus, what's the point of clothes if they don't properly express who you are?"
